Astaxanthin Dipalmitate

3,3'-bis(hexadecanoyloxy)-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione (astaxanthin 3,3'-dipalmitate)

Astaxanthin dipalmitate is the 3,3'-dipalmitate diester of astaxanthin, 3,3'-bis(hexadecanoyloxy)-β,β-carotene-4,4'-dione (CAS 112421-21-3; C72H112O6; molecular weight 1073.68), in which both ring hydroxyl groups are acylated with palmitic (hexadecanoic) acid. It corresponds to the fatty-acid esters in which astaxanthin naturally occurs in marine and algal biomass, and is supplied as a single, characterized diester species rather than the mixed mono- and di-esters of the algal oleoresin or the free, unesterified synthetic grade. Its molecular weight is nearly double that of the free carotenoid, so the astaxanthin backbone accounts for a correspondingly smaller fraction of the total mass. It is a lipophilic, oil-dispersible material. We manufacture it into softgels and powders.
