Zeaxanthin

Synthetic zeaxanthin (e.g. OPTISHARP)

(3R,3'R)-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol

Synthetic zeaxanthin is the same xanthophyll carotenoid (3R,3'R)-beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol (CAS 144-68-3, EC 205-636-4; C40H56O2, MW 568.87), assembled by chemical synthesis rather than botanical extraction. It is produced as the free, non-esterified diol and formulated into stabilized starch or gelatin beadlets standardized to a stated total zeaxanthin percent. It is molecularly identical to the marigold-derived free diol but is not plant-sourced, and it carries the (3R,3'R) configuration that distinguishes it from the (3R,3'S) meso stereoisomer; being a free diol, it also differs from the higher-mass dipalmitate diester. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules, tablets, powders and gummies.
