Retinol (CAS 68-26-8) is the free alcohol form of preformed vitamin A, molecular formula C20H30O, and the parent compound from which the retinyl esters are made. Unlike the palmitate and acetate esters it carries no acyl group, giving it the lowest molecular weight of the preformed ester and alcohol forms (286.45) and the highest intrinsic retinol content. Because the unesterified alcohol is less oxidation-stable than its esters, it is handled as an HPLC-assayed oil concentrate and standardised in IU. We manufacture it into softgels, capsules and liquids.
