Potassium Iodate

Potassium iodate

Potassium iodate is the inorganic potassium salt of iodic acid (KIO3, CAS 7758-05-6), in which iodine sits in the oxidized +5 iodate state rather than the reduced iodide state of potassium or sodium iodide. It is produced by oxidizing iodide or reacting iodine with potassium hydroxide under oxidizing conditions, yielding a white crystalline powder that is less hygroscopic and more oxidation-stable than the corresponding iodide. It carries about 59% elemental iodine by weight, the lowest elemental load among the family's common inorganic salts, and is less water-soluble than the iodides. We manufacture it as tablets, capsules and powders, and it is the customary iodine carrier for salt-iodization premixes.
