Sodium Iodate

Sodium iodate is the sodium salt of iodic acid (NaIO3, CAS 7681-55-2), an oxidized +5 iodate salt paralleling potassium and calcium iodate rather than the reduced sodium and potassium iodides. It is manufactured by oxidizing sodium iodide or reacting iodine with sodium hydroxide under oxidizing conditions, giving a white crystalline powder that is more oxidation-stable and less hygroscopic than sodium iodide. It carries roughly 64% elemental iodine by weight, close to calcium iodate (~65%) and above potassium iodate (~59%), and is less freely soluble than the iodide salts. We manufacture it as powders and tablets, and it is used chiefly as a salt-fortification iodine ingredient.
