Lutein Esters (marigold)

(3R,3'R,6'R)-beta,epsilon-carotene-3,3'-diyl dihexadecanoate (lutein dipalmitate)

Lutein esters are the naturally esterified form of lutein from marigold (Tagetes erecta), in which the two hydroxyl groups of the carotenoid backbone are acylated by long-chain fatty acids; the dipalmitate, (3R,3'R,6'R)-beta,epsilon-carotene-3,3'-diyl dihexadecanoate (CAS 547-17-1, C72H116O4, MW 1045.69), is the representative species. The grade is produced from non-saponified marigold oleoresin, preserving the native fatty-acid esters rather than cleaving them, and comprises a mix of long-chain diesters (predominantly dipalmitate, with dimyristate and mixed esters) standardized to total lutein-ester content. Because the fatty-acid chains add mass, the esters have a markedly higher molecular weight and a lower lutein load per unit mass than the family's free lutein; content is commonly expressed as free-lutein equivalents after saponification, and the intact ester is the more oxidation-stable of the two physical forms. It is supplied as an oil-based oleoresin. We manufacture it in softgels, capsules, tablets, powders, gummies and liquids.
