Selenious Acid

Selenous acid

Selenious acid (CAS 7783-00-8, H2O3Se, MW 128.98) is the inorganic oxyacid of tetravalent selenium and the free parent acid from which the selenite salts are derived, with selenium in the +4 oxidation state. On an elemental basis it is the most concentrated form in the family at roughly 61% selenium by weight, reflecting the absence of the sodium counter-ions carried by sodium selenite and sodium selenate. It shares the +4 (selenite) oxidation state of sodium selenite but is the free acid rather than the neutralized sodium salt, and it is wholly inorganic in contrast to the organic seleno-amino acids and the yeast matrix. Because it is handled in solution, we supply it exclusively in liquid trace-element format rather than as a powder or solid dosage form.
