Selenium-Enriched Yeast

Selenized Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (selenomethionine-rich matrix)

Selenium-enriched yeast is inactivated Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultivated in a selenium-rich medium so that the growing cells incorporate selenium into their proteins, yielding a whole-yeast matrix in which the selenium is predominantly L-selenomethionine alongside selenocysteine and Se-methylselenocysteine. Because the selenium is carried within yeast biomass rather than as an isolated compound, its elemental load is far lower than the pure salts or amino acids, typically standardized to around 2000 ug/g (roughly 0.1 to 0.2% Se) by total selenium assay. This distinguishes it from single-compound ingredients such as L-selenomethionine or sodium selenite, which are chemically defined, and from the inorganic salts, which carry selenium as an oxidized anion. It is produced as a fine powder and manufactured into tablets, capsules and powder blends.
