Le fer électrolytique est du fer métallique élémentaire de haute pureté au degré d'oxydation zéro (CAS 7439-89-6; Fe, MW 55.85), produit par dépôt électrolytique et broyé en poudre fine. Ne portant aucun anion ni ligand salifiant, il compte parmi les ingrédients de fer les plus concentrés de la famille avec environ 99% de fer élémentaire, aux côtés du fer carbonyle et du fer réduit et bien au-dessus des sels et des chélates. C'est une poudre métallique grise, finement divisée, largement utilisée comme agent d'enrichissement alimentaire, transformée en comprimés, gélules et mélanges en poudre.
